1969

The Lower Manhattan Expressway is defeated. Robert Moses’s plan for a ten-lane elevated motorway through SoHo and Little Italy is killed after years of opposition led by Jane Jacobs. It is the moment American city planning stops assuming that neighbourhoods lose to roads.
