The five boroughs consolidate. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island merge into one city of 3.4 million people, second in the world only to London. Brooklyn, then the third-largest city in the United States, approves the merger by about 300 votes out of 130,000.
