The Brooklyn Bridge opens. Fourteen years in the building, at the cost of John Roebling’s life and his son Washington’s health. Emily Warren Roebling carries her husband’s instructions to the site for years and effectively runs the project. Six days after opening, a crush on the stairs kills twelve people.
