1857

Central Park begins, and Seneca Village is cleared. The Greensward Plan by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux wins the design competition. Construction requires clearing Seneca Village, a settlement of around 225 people, most of them Black landowners, by eminent domain.
