Gilded Age · event 11 of 14

28 October 1886

The Statue of Liberty is dedicated. A gift from France, shipped in 214 crates in 1885 and left unassembled while fundraising for the pedestal stalled. Joseph Pulitzer’s newspaper campaign, printing the name of every donor, finally pays for it.
