Peter Stuyvesant arrives. Stuyvesant takes over as director-general and finds a town with failing defences and a population that mostly ignores its governors. He builds, regulates, and repeatedly tries to restrict religious practice — and is repeatedly overruled from Amsterdam on commercial grounds.
