8 September 1664

New Amsterdam becomes New York. Four English warships anchor in the Narrows and demand surrender. Stuyvesant wants to fight; the town’s leading citizens, including his own son, petition him not to. He signs the articles of capitulation without a shot fired. The town is renamed for James, Duke of York.
