The first Jewish community. Twenty-three Sephardic Jews arrive from Recife in Brazil after the Portuguese retake it. Stuyvesant tries to expel them and is overruled by the company, several of whose shareholders are Jewish. Congregation Shearith Israel dates from this arrival and still exists.
