Verrazzano enters the Narrows. Giovanni da Verrazzano, a Florentine navigator sailing for Francis I of France, becomes the first European known to enter New York Harbour. He anchors in the Narrows, exchanges greetings with Lenape who paddle out to meet him, and leaves without landing for long. The bridge across the Narrows carries his name.
